Golden - by MY Morning Jacket

It is rare to experience a song that flows through you on many different levels. To say we hear songs does not do justice to the experience. We feel songs. They crawl through our bodies like electricity, like vines wrapping around our spine and dancing up our neck. Our organs fill with the melody and lyrics. Its like the warm touch of someone your love, grounding, and cleansing.

Music evolves with us. We can hear a song from our past and be transported back to a time and place we’ve forgotten, or it can bring a new perspective when we learn more about ourselves. But music can evoke both beauty and ugliness, joy and sorry. Music is like crying. It reminds us that inside it all feels the same.

Of the many songs I listen to when I am in different moods, the song Golden by My Morning Jacket has been standing out lately. Perhaps it’s the linear structure that flows lyrically with rhymes and themes as hooks instead of returning to a repetitive chorus.

People always told me
That bars are dark and lonely
And talk is often cheap And filled with air
Sure, sometimes they thrill me
But nothin’ could ever chill me
Like the way they make
The time just disappear

The lyrics themselves beautifully describe the human experience. The disbelieving surprise and seduction of success and the inevitable emptiness of thinking that peace is achieved through external rewards. How vices, especially praise, rob you of time which is the most precious thing. Its a testament to love, the thing that is there before and sustains well after any kind of material success.

It’s the form of the lyrics in Jim James vocal range with a soft touch and haunting tone, like a friendly ghost watching the film of his life unfold on the endless fields of his fans.

A feeling in my bones, I never felt before.”

The connection of ambition and success, seeing the crowd roll in to see him, watching his dreams come true, expecting the world to change only to realize that his soul is still the same and so are his struggles.

The melody, with just the right twang, flows in a harmony of echoing voices that allows the lyrics to fluctuate in and out, like a soaring bird in the thermal gust that glides it freely and effortlessly down the horizon.

Success or failure, broke or rich, it’s the struggle and the balance of going through ‘this thing’ together. Perhaps staying together, with yourself and your loved ones is the golden shores of heaven we all strive to reach.

Watchin' a stretch of road
Miles of light explode
Driftin' off a thing
I'd never done before
Watchin' a crowd roll in
Out go the lights it begins
A feelin' in my bones
I never felt before

Mmm, people always told me
That bars are dark and lonely
And talk is often cheap
And filled with air
Sure, sometimes they thrill me
But nothin' could ever chill me
Like the way they make
The time just disappear

Feelin' you are here again
Hot on my skin again
Feelin' good's a thing
I'd never known before
What does it mean to feel?
Millions of dreams come real
A feelin' in my soul
I'd never felt before, mmm

And you always told me
No matter how long it holds me
If it falls apart
Or makes us millionaires
You'll be right here forever
We'll go through this thing together
And on heaven's golden shore
We'll lay our heads
